(martial arts, dance arts, healing arts) in a heart pumping, energizing, total body
workout. Through this combination you will develop greater awareness and
integration of body, mind and your own creative essence, so that eventually you
move from a sense of inner strength, grace and spontaneous freedom. This
class rocks with fabulous music and soulful inspiration. It is a great complement
to an ongoing yoga practice and other exercise programs and appropriate for all
fitness levels. No experience required. Just come and discover the joy of
intelligent movement!
BALLET STRETCH with Amy Skye Robinson
Monday, Wednesday, 12:45-2pm
Thursday, 4:30-5:45pm
Saturday, 10:30am-12pm
Sunday, 11am-12:15pm (1st and 3rd Sunday – call studio for dates)
All Levels welcome. No Ballet experience needed.
Based on Skye's 30 years of Classical Ballet training, this class extrapolates
time-honored ballet movement techniques and reinterprets them for
professional athletes and individuals looking for optimal, overall fitness. The
same body mechanics that create the unparalleled elevation, efficient weight
shifts, deep stretch, controlled strength and surefootedness inherent to ballet
can be translated into accessible, superior fitness training for the lay person.
Key principles emphasized: 1. Central abdominal strengthening to develop distal
muscle control; 2. Muscle output that achieves maximally elongated postures; 3.
Full-range rather than mid-range controlled changes in muscle length; 4.
Counter-stretch resistance for alignment and control; 5. Strategies to improve
movement fluidity including proper knee and foot alignment; 6. Enhanced
proprioception and kinesthetic awareness; 7. Injury prevention through
educated use of muscles and body mechanics.
ACTIVE YOGA CLASSES (see schedule and class descriptions for specifics)
Active Yoga Classes include Anusara-Inspired Yoga, Power Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Yoga 2 Music, Going Deeper, Hatha Yoga, Kundalini Yoga and Gentle Yoga.
These classes are active in that they are a physical yoga practice, a complete
workout for the entire body/mind. The styles are different depending on the
class but they all include poses (asana), breathwork (pranayama) and
meditation. In general all of these styles can be classified under the generic
term of Hatha Yoga. One definition of the term "hatha" is determined effort in
Sanskrit. This implies that it is a practice that requires work/activity/force to
liberate the life force within. It also is a practice that recognizes the interplay of
body and mind. What we do with the body affects the mind and vice versa.
Through practice we develop greater health, mental focus, and mindful
awareness that influences general wellbeing. This ultimately prepares us for the
meditation practices that are at the heart of the yoga tradition.
We offer a variety of classes that are a vinyasa or flow style practice and
ultimately derive from the Ashtanga yoga system. In the Vinyasa, Power and
Yoga 2 Music classes the sequencing will vary from week to week depending on
the teacher. All of these classes coordinate a sequential posture flow with the
dynamics of the breath.
In the Hatha Yoga class there is more focus on alignment and attention to detail
and form in the poses. This in-depth exploration of a variety of poses is very
therapeutic and essential for a balanced practice.
Anusara-Inspired Yoga and Going Deeper combine principles of alignment with
the dynamic movement of a flow class for a fully integrated practice.
Kundalini Yoga combines dynamic breathing, specific movements and stretches
to balance the nervous and glandular systems and the energetic body, also
known as the chakra system.
And finally, Gentle Yoga is an active practice that is less vigorous than the other classes.
In general, each style has its own rewards. You are encouraged to try all styles
since ultimately your practice should be fulfilling, meaningful and fun.
QUIET YOGA CLASSES
Quiet yoga classes are just that, quiet, contemplative, restful with minimal or no
movement. They provide an opportunity to just be without having to do
anything so you can experience the power and healing benefits of stillness. Our
quiet classes are Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga/Meditation.
YIN YOGA
Tuesday, 7:15-8:30pm with Cynthia
A complement to more active forms of Yoga and other types of vigorous
physical activity, Yin yoga is a quiet and contemplative practice that promotes
greater circulation of energy through the body, increased mobility of the joints
and an opportunity to explore and examine one's deeper nature through
observation of mind and sensation. Yin postures are held for three to five
minutes with muscles relaxed in order to "exercise" the connective tissue,
primarily of the hips, pelvis, lower spine and shoulders.
This class is open to all practitioners and will combine the experience of Yin
postures with Taoist and meridian theory, pranayama, silence, and occasional
groaning! This is the perfect way to unwind after a busy day!
RESTORATIVE YOGA/MEDITATION
Friday, 10:45-11:45am with Fez
Friday, 12-2:30pm – Meditation with Fez (suggested donation $5)
3 Friday’s in April – Meditation Series with Fez – 4/4, 4/11, 4/18
12-12:45pm – Pre-registration required. No drop-ins. $30/series
This ongoing class is the perfect way to unwind from a hectic morning or day.
Give yourself the time and space to relax, rejuvenate and experience the power
of Restorative Yoga and Meditation.
Restorative Yoga is a profoundly soothing and rejuvenating practice for the
central and autonomic nervous system. It is an important component to a
complete yoga practice and great for EVERYONE - beginners as well as those
experienced in yoga. It is also beneficial for those who may be dealing with
specific health concerns and are not currently able to participate in a regular
yoga class. Because Restorative Yoga is an extremely gentle and restful practice,
it is perfect for those recuperating from illness and injury. It also helps alleviate
the effects of stress, anxiety, headaches, migraines, depression, PMS,
menopausal symptoms and aging. The class will include Restorative Yoga poses
(poses you stay in for 5-15 minutes with the support of props to facilitate
complete rest), Pranayama (breathing techniques) and Meditation. In addition to
relieving the effects of chronic stress, the poses also stimulate and soothe the
organs and balance the energy of the body. Pranayama increases lung capacity,
strength and fitness. Meditation calms and focuses the mind, allowing us to be
happier and clearer in our thinking. If you have never practiced a full hour of
Restorative Yoga and Meditation you are in for a treat.
